Sporting Rifle Model 1871/78 serial #2
This bolt action rifle is marked
on the receiver 'GFBR Mauser & Co. Oberndorf a/n Wurttemberg
1878', three years before the 'Patent DRP 15202 von 16 Marz 1881'.
This rifle has the SHORT RECEIVER and a half length ROW
MAGAZINE according to the patent and is in caliber 47x9.5
mm. The trigger mechanism is serial #1, the receiver is serial
#2 and both numbers are stamped internally. The stock is stamped
'41' in front of the rear sling swivel which is the Mauser factory
museum inventory number. The rifle has double set triggers and
a beautiful walnut 'tiger' grain stock. The rifle carries about
70% high polish/fire blue finish on the receiver and 90% factory
original brown finish on the octagon barrel and the bore is mint.
The case hardening on the trigger guard has disappeared and the
removable horn support to the rear of the trigger guard is of
